I recently facilitated two sessions at a Victorian Secondary College on the ethics of social media. The students provided powerful insights into the big issues important for them in social media, with privacy issues foremost. These students represent and reflect the concerns of your business clients in data collection and use. They understand and questions notions of data ownership – ‘What is mine? What have I authorized to you? How has my trust been breached?’ Companies must have a clear contract and ethical framework with clients. They must understand and accept your company values and vision for them so as to ‘be along for the ride’. Onerous and lengthy Terms and Conditions no one reads is not sufficient. Craft your message powerfully and simply:

- Are you on song with your clients?
- Identify your tribe and be ahead of the pack…
